Artist-Scholar Shanaé Burch (she/her) teams up with Director-Dramaturg Des Bennett (they/them) to co-conceive a solo performance project as an artistic component of her dissertation in order to document coming to understand life and Black creativity in juxtaposition to premature death. In this virtual theatrical performance that mindfully blends the procedurally-authored aesthetics of a play with testimony and stories of homegoings and ancestral recall, the artists have prepared an experience that facilitates the holding of grief as a sacred ritual for health and wellbeing. Through the lens of self, community, and society, Shanaé invites the audience to participate in reflecting on family, creativity, and “good health” while motivated by health equity. In a bricolage of song, movement, words, and celestial glimmerings, we greet the stress of what gets underneath our skin and reckon with the all too familiar textures of Grief Love.

This presentation of a work in progress will be followed by a dialogue between the artists and audience.
